7A – Testing the Hypothesis, Part 1

Opportunity: Data privacy has always been an issue, but with increasing technological advances, we are more at risk. There is an opportunity to create software that detects when a system is being hacked.

The Who: Business or organizations that want better privacy/protection Softwares

The What: technological advances cause data privacy to threaten businesses and people’s personal information increasingly.

The Why: Because of the more significant technological advances, people want their information protected.

Hypothesis:

Testing the who: There are others who share this need. This opportunity could spread into the business of personal security software. Meaning, instead of creating a software that detects when a business’s system is being hacked, we could also create a mobile phone system that detects your phones, banking, and/or personal information is being hacked.

Testing the what: the boundaries of this would include people not wanting to give us their personal information or access to their accounts in the first place. Also, the boundary includes the actual ability to create this software.

Testing the why: This need is for everyone. Everyone should, in some way, protect their private information. Although not everyone wants it, some will believe that they won’t need security software like this because they think that they won’t get hacked, that it won’t happen to them.

Interviews:

Person One, a 20-year-old girl: She would personally like this need for her mobile phone and computers. To protect herself on sketchy wifi services when she logs onto her bank accounts or uses passwords in various applications. She understands the risks of today’s world and wants to protect her and her personal information.

Person Two, a 50-year-old man: He does not like the idea of software like this. He does not want to give up access to his devices for our software protection. He feels that there is no need to protect himself because his accounts and information will not be hacked.

Person Three, an 18-year-old girl: She also believes that with the risk of data privacy, she would like software like this to a certain extent. She is only a freshman in college; big protection software like this would most like be costly. She loves the idea of protection but would not be able to purchase this.

Person Four, a 19-year-old girl: She believes that software like this could be beneficial to be corporations and businesses but thinks a mobile device software for herself is not necessary. She is still young and yet to understand her need for her information privacy.

Person Five, 20-year-old boy: Also, this thinks that software like this could be beneficial to be corporations and businesses, but he does not yet see the need for this. Nor does he believe he would be able to afford it.

Summary of interviews: To summarize, this opportunity to create privacy software would not target the younger generation. This is due to them not understanding the seriousness of information privacy. Or, if they do, they would be unable to afford a program like this. I now know this opportunity should be aimed more towards big business or corporations who want to protect the finances and information. Also, businesses and corporations can afford a program like this.

  1. Savannah,
Just as you stated, we are more at risk with technological advances, but due to these advances are the reason that a solution is also possible, thus, your opportunity. After reading the responses from the interviewees, I see that this could be a pricy service due to comparison to other similar services like Norton. Personally, I think everyone feels like the world is after them, when in reality someone attempting to hack me is wasting their time. Due to my belief, I do think your software would sell regardless of the price.

  2. Hi Savannah,
I completely agree with everything you said and that although data privacy was always a risk, it is even more of a risk with all these technological advancements. I think that both a business system and a mobile system are great ideas that will hopefully increase data protection for everyone. I also think it was good that you got to interview people of three different ages in order to get better insight on this growing issue and see what they thought of your solution.

  3. Hi Savannah! I saw that another group member of ours also tested a hypothesis about data privacy and cybersecurity. I loved your post, as the perspectives of different people really brought the different facets of the issue to light. Great interviews! I do think that based on talking to more people, you might find that there are young people interested in this software too!
